Baby Boomers Are The Masters of Reinvention

Lorraine Pirihi knows what it takes to reinvent herself as a baby boomer. At 53, she had to turn her world on its head to find a new way to earn a living after a midlife burnout. She is now an author, coach and runs a successful networking group in Melbourne’s Bayside.

As a specialist baby boomer coach, she sees so many others like her struggling to keep up.

“I knew I did not want to curl up my toes and be put out to pasture but I was burnt out and sick of the business treadmill. You have to reinvent yourself, reignite the passion for life and pursue your goals more than ever before” she said.

“Working with other baby boomers, I see many struggle with business and life. They want to keep going but they are tired and running their business has gotten too hard. They also do not want to quit because they want to leave a legacy for their family.”

Overcoming many of their challenges isn’t that hard but they need to adapt new ways of thinking and working to reclaim their time and attain a more prosperous future.

“It is never too late to learn a new trick; in fact, it is vital for business success to keep learning – how to use new technology, apps and processes that make business easier,
Lorraine said.

“Then there is productivity. Let’s face it, by the time we hit our late 50s, our bodies are changing, it is harder to get out of bed in the morning and you know you only have so much time to get things done.

“Adapting is also about making the hard decisions – is it time to sell the business, get your finances in order or work on your relationships?”

Like Bernard Salt, Lorraine believes the baby boomer generation has the ability to keep reinventing itself to remain relevant in an ever changing market place.

“It is never too late to make changes. It is imperative that as baby boomers, we do change. This generation of baby boomers are like no other – we have lived through so much – and life does not have to be grind,” she said.

“I have men in their 50s and 60s coming to me who are raising young families and juggling business. It brings about a whole new level of challenges. Or they have been in business for 20 to 40 years and dealing with a new generation armed, empowered with information available at a swipe.

“It is easy to burn out and get overwhelmed. But age is now no longer a reason to stop. What baby boomers need to do is get smarter and more productive with their time so they can have the life they want.

“Many of us will not have the retirement our parents or grandparents had; we HAVE to keep earning.”

Lorraine believes quick-fix solutions are not the answer. “These quick solutions generally don’t work long term as they haven’t addressed the real cause of their problems…themselves,” she said.
