Walgett Region consists of the towns of Walgett, Lightning Ridge and Collarenebri, and villages of Burren Junction, Carinda, Come By Chance, Cryon, Cumborah, Grawin, Glengarry & Sheepyard Opal Fields, Merrywinebone, Pokataroo and Rowena, each with their own charm and character.

There is so much to see and do in the region, that you will wish you had planned a longer stay! Try as many as you can of the following, and take the stories back to your family and friends:

  • Sightseeing at ‘Stanley’ the emu sculpture near Lightning Ridge on the Castlereagh Highway, with more sculptures to come in the future
  • Fossicking for Black Opal in Lightning Ridge, Grawin, Glengarry & Sheepyard Opal Fields
  • Fishing on the rivers in Walgett and Collarenebri (home of the famous Murray Cod)
  • Bird watching for Red Tailed Black Cockatoos and more than 170 other species at the Macquarie Marshes
  • Escape, unwind and rejuvenate at Lightning Ridge, Walgett and Burren Junction’s hot artesian bore baths
  • Relax and view beautiful, colourful sunsets, clear night skies and iconic Australian wildlife

The Walgett Region also has an active and passionate arts community – make your first stop the Walgett Visitor Information Centre and Library, and be sure to visit the John Murray art gallery in Lighting Ridge.

How to get to the Walgett Region

BY ROAD: Walgett Region is located approximately 690km north west of Sydney, 677km from Canberra, 700km south west of Brisbane and 912km from Melbourne, with main highways covering most of the entirety of the routes.

BY AIR: The closest operating airports with flights are Moree or Dubbo. Please click the links below to check available flights:

BY RAIL & BUS: Countrylink service the Walgett Region daily with stops at both Walgett and Lightning Ridge. From Sydney, catch the XPT train to Dubbo, and the Countrylink bus continues from Dubbo up to Walgett and Lightning Ridge. See Countrylink website: http://www.countrylink.info/ .

Accommodation

Walgett Region has three free camping grounds: Walgett – Alex Trevallion Park; Collarenebri – Collarenebri Oval, 2 km from town, on the Moree road; and Burren Junction – at the bore baths, 2km east of Burren Junction (open seasonally).
