Seniors week is the time to get fit with two of our centres are offering special deals!

Ian Thorpe Aquatic and Fitness Centre

Cook+Phillip Park Aquatic and Fitness Centre and Ian Thorpe Aquatic and Fitness Centre both embrace the three principles of Fitness, Fun and Friendship, to enable members aged 50 and over to live happy and healthy lives.

Both Centres, managed by YMCA NSW in partnership with the City of Sydney, offer discounted memberships for over 50’s to help make fitness and fun more affordable.

In 2015, we want to do something a little special; so during NSW Senior’s week, Saturday 14 March – Sunday 22 March, seniors can utilises all the facilities we have to offer, for FREE!

Jackie Bolger, Centre Manager, said both Centres focus on fitness designed specifically for seniors in their everyday programming in order to provide the opportunity for older members of the community to get fit, healthy and connect with others.

“Programs and services targeting older people which encourage the adoption of a healthy life both physically, mentally and socially, have never been so important as the Australian population continues to age,” she said.

This focus on connecting older people in our community is vital given that 25% of those aged 55 and over in NSW live alone and don’t have regular contact with family and friends (Source: ABS).

“The PrYme Movers program is designed specifically for seniors to keep active and meet new people and includes both land and water-based programs such as aerobics and aqua aerobics,” Bolger said.

“The social networking and coffee catch-ups for our senior participants is just as important as the active components – some of our members have made life-long friends through their weekly workouts together,” she said.

Sans Souci Leisure Centre

Some that swim at the centre were initially taught by their parents in the tidal baths, some recall attending school carnivals here where they met their first love and now watch as their grand children attend the learn to swim lessons with trained instructors in the same block where the current outdoor pool was built in the 1960s.

Every weekday morning, many retired locals come along and as part of their daily routine swim a km or so each day with likeminded friends and catch up for a coffee/tea at the poolside cafe. Like part of the daily routine many have become family to Sans Souci Leisure Centre. Alison Rowe Aqua Aerobics Instructor speaks with great conviction about the benefits on the mind, body & soul.  “It is a resistance workout with low body impact, it helps strengthen the body with no wear and tear, most of all it is fun!!!”.    Jenny Lewis, a member of the centre has been doing this class for the past 5 years and loves it, she has made many friends and enthusiastically adds, “ I enjoy the social side as well”.

A hidden jewel in Sans Souci where in off peak times is like having a 2nd home where the hustle & bustle of life are easily replaced by the lapping of a swimmer completing his first full pool length like he was a teenager yesterday.
