Canberra’s tourism calendar

The National Gallery of Australia in Canberra is gearing up to stage its next major exhibition, Fred Williams: Infinite Horizons. The exhibition will be a highlight in Canberra’s spring tourism calendar as it showcases the works of one of Australia’s greatest artists, Fred Williams.

Opening on 12 August, this is the first major retrospective of Williams’ work in over 25 years. The exhibition will highlight his strength as a landscape artist and includes important oil paintings and luminous gouaches that reveal his distinctive approach.

“Featuring over 100 works of art, the exhibition provides an insight into Fred Williams’ unique take on the Australian landscape. It includes major international loans from the Tate in London, and numerous works from private collections, many of which have not been displayed publicly before,” said exhibition Curator Deborah Hart.

Visitors will see a stunning range of Williams’ paintings inspired by the unique Australian landscape from the Pilbara in Western Australia to Weipa in North Queensland, along with his iconic seascapes and portraiture.  For visiting families, the Education Activity Room will offer interactive activities inspired by Williams’ artworks providing the opportunity for visitors to engage with the artist’s creative process, influences and working methods.

The exhibition will coincide with Canberra’s spring festival, Floriade, which is on during September and October, and is a must see on any visit to Canberra during Spring. Information on Canberra including accommodation deals and packages can be found at www.visitcanberra.com.au
